Sort these out first
Before you decide anything about an inherited house, three things are worth sorting out:
- Whose name is on the title? A title company can run this quickly. If the house is still in the deceased's name, some form of probate or a small-estate affidavit usually comes first — see our probate page.
- Talk to a tax professional before selling. Inherited property often gets favorable tax treatment on a sale — worth understanding before you do anything.
